Nissan considering GT-R-based SUV?

I found this from Leftlane:

While new CAFE regulations will eventually force automakers to shift their SUV-heavy lineups, in today's market, SUVs are still some of the biggest profit earners. Because of this fact, some automakers best known for sports cars have entered the SUV market — such as Porsche with its Cayenne SUV. So if Porsche can make a successful high-performance SUV, why not Nissan?

Japan's Best Car Magazine has published renderings of what a Nissan GT-R-based SUV might look like. While it remains unclear if Best Car created the pictures on insider information or just for speculation, the magazine reports that the SUV would use the same 480 horsepower powerplant found in the GT-R.
And if such a vehicle is under development — although there have been no indications that Nissan plans to produce such a vehicle — the Porsche Cayenne Turbo would be a likely benchmark, just as the 911 Turbo was a benchmark for the GT-R.
As unlikely as an SUV version of the GT-R seems to be, a four-door variation of the GT-R might be brought to fruition via an Infiniti model.

Well who knows, lots of rumors going around now. It seems possible but at the same time, I feel that nissan might have reservations about putting the GTR platform into a whole array of cars... 4 doors and SUVs

Time will tell.

Thoughts?

I don't think they'll call it a GT-R but they now have the new PM/VR38DETT platform to play around with. Who knows what they'll use it for beyond the GT-R.

In my opinion, they'll eventually use this GT-R platform for future Skylines, ie, G35/37 replacements in the near future, dropping the V-chassis.

they have to make money so you should see the technology trickle down and platforms used for other things

That's right, Shahul; they're going to introduce some of the GT-R's engineering into lower models of Nissans, most probably the Skylines.

yeah, while i didn't like that they were doing it, it made sense, more people buy suv's than sports cars, that seems sad, but that means that there are fewer sports cars other there

and thats ok with me

(porsche could have chosen to not name it after a pepper though)

Honestly, it doesn't much bother me if they make an SUV out of the PM platform; they've been doing this for years with the V chassis and VQ35 platform.

If it sustains the health of Nissan as a company, then it will only benefit the GT-R's longevity as Nissan's top dog. And that can only be good for us.
