the older GTRs were all limited in production as well:
there were only a little over 43,000 R32s ever made.
about 16,050 R33s were made, and a little over 12 or 13,000 R34s were made. that is highly limited in number for a mass-produced car. the GTR was never meant to be as plentiful as a regular Skyline, as it has always been a high-ticket-cost novelty vehicle for Nissan. part of the GTR's allure it's is exclusivity.
insofar as it being made for only 2 or 3 years, nobody knows. but i would not believe that. they will not research and develop an all-new GTR platform and ethos to just then yank it from the world market and end it so quickly. that makes no sense. if that were the case, they should never even make the GTR. a generation run is typically in at least 4 year life cycles. if not 5.

Z06 number of units
Z06 #of units made:
2001 -- 5,773
2002 -- 8,297
2003 -- 8,635
2004 -- 5,683
2005 -- no Z06 made?
2006 -- 6000 (latest number subject to change (?))
-----------------
approx # of units: 34,388 (as of this post date)
moral of the story:
so far, less Z06's exist than the RB series GTRs. Z06 is more exclusive a line of Corvette than GTR was for Skyline.
there may be validity to the rumor of GTR approximately equalling the Z06 exclusivity. will it be available for only 2 or 3 years? i seriously doubt that part. the Z06 will be going into it's 6th year for 2007. orders are already being taken.
but Nissan is not GM. all bets are off

ID codes and the great unknowns
for the longest time, i thought that logic was logical, too. i even posted about it from a philosophical stance. but there are "strong" rumors that the car will be called R35 to carry the heritage and generation sequence intact. the japanese are very, very keen on heritage and symbolic meanings of things. furthermore, the chassis code and platform are not in any way related to the V-series Skylines. so the GTR is exempt from following that lineage.
but, yes, i know, we really don't know for sure much of anything at this point. everyone for the longest time thought it would be an Infiniti, for example (which i never thought was appropriate), and, alas, she's a Nissan (why? because there was tremendous pressure from the global community to keep it that way). so much value is being set on Names and codes and adherance to tradition to ID the GTR.
this is also why as it's own distinct platform and identity apart from Skyline (allegedly), the GTR was kept rather faithful in overall design to the R34. yes, it's different, but you can see cues all around the car that maintains the boxy-looking aggression of the prior GTRs. and telltale traits of GTR design heritage are maintained (like the dual afterburner tail lamps, the large and boxy front openings, the stance of the car, etc).
yes, it could well be called R36, but if they are even going to use the "R" designation at all, it follows to reason that R35 would be the very reason to keep the "R" in the first place. otherwise, they should not even call it by "R" and start over. or at least call it "V36" and have the new GTR platform and chassis code become the actual next gen of "V."
see what i mean? now it can be anything! they could entirely break away and call it "A1 GTR." or "Z1GTR"
