v10 R8, what do you guys think?

from leftlane:

Nissan and GM have managed to attract a lot of attention to their new GT-R and Corvette ZR1 sports cars thanks to some highly publicized lap times at Germany’s Nurburgring race track. With the launch of the V10 version of R8 around the corner, Audi hopes to trump both cars with a time faster than 7 minutes and 26 seconds.
Exact specs of the new range-topping R8 are unknown, but it should deliver around 535 horsepower and is expected to debut at the Paris Motor Show in October.
While Audi hasn’t yet made an official proclamation of R8 V10’s Nurburgring-crushing abilities, a source told Sweden’s Auto Motor & Sport the new model has already beat the ZR1.
A month ago, GM announced a ZR1 piloted by development engineer Jim Mero recorded a time of 7 minutes 26.4 seconds — three seconds faster than the Nissan GT-R time announced in May.
With Nissan aiming for a sub-7:25 lap time with its Spec-V GT-R, it will be interesting to see if the Audi will manage to come out on top.

i think they could do it...

i mean, Germans make the best cars in the world. (and Italians)

And lets face it. this is a GERMAN response to the hype surrounding, what is to them, a home field track, being that it is in germany. I would asume they feel some sort of national pride involved. And we all know how passionate Germans can be when it comes to Nationalism.

I think the R8 scores a 7:24

Once Audi gets a lap time down expect BMW and Mercedes to follow.

Mid engine cars do have an advantage, I think weight and gear box may be whats holding the audi back.
plus you have to think this might hurt Audi's LP560 sales, so why try it?

Porsche will have a twin clutch gear box for the 2009 Carreras, I think that Porsche has a more legitimate shot at the record

The R8s in person are very cool machines. Pictures don't give you what they're about. The R8 is a very small car, btw.

I think Nissan will stay on top with the Spec V.

You have it in reverse. The Germans have created the party that is being assaulted by the other manufacturers. It is time for the German's party to come to a rude awakening. They're not the standard anymore.
